When the village loses a beloved son…

“One of the most tragic and traumatic losses life can deal out to a person is the death of a child. The death of a child means the loss of more than just a precious life. It represents the loss of future experiences and future hopes. No parent is prepared for the loss of a child, and when it happens, their world is changed forever. The grief, guilt, and anguish felt are acute and lasting.”

On June 27th, a Mercedes plowed into a 2019 Honda Accord in  the Hamilton Heights section of Manhattan.  Five people in the Honda suffered head and body injuries.  The driver and four passengers were rushed to the hospital — but back seat passenger our beloved Christian Davis, 22, could not be saved.  Our talented Christian Davis, a child of Guyana’s diaspora, our son, brother, friend, role model and “positive light” for many of his grieving friends, was only 22 year old.  The village mourns the loss of our beloved son.

“People would describe Christian as a social butterfly,” his mother, Nichelle Davis, said. “He was very happy and always ready to celebrate. He loved life, and he loved to celebrate life.”  Davis was known to be ambitious, and often pursued a number of interests at any given time, his mother said, noting that he kept a book in which he recorded his ideas. She said he was interested in fashion, repurposed old clothes and had started learning how to sew. He was also interested in photography, and had purchased his own camera. He had even tried making his own hair products. Other recent interests included cooking, his mother recalling how he would cook for family events such as her birthday, wedding anniversary and the occasional brunch. Her favorite food that her son cooked her was chicken and grits. His father, Samuel Davis, said his favorite dish was “Rasta pasta.”

Left to mourn are Christian’s mom Nichelle Davis, his dad Samuel Davis, his brothers Alva and Julian Davis, his sister Samara Davis, his grandparents Mr & Mrs. Terrence Blackman and Mrs. Elcana Davis.  Also left to mourn are his cousins Madiba, Sasha, Marcus, Zara, Lydia, Devon, Timothy Jr, Johann, Colleen, Claudette, Leon, Collette, Andrew, Maziely, Anthony, Arielle, Britini, Olivia and Eli, his aunts; Eslyn, Wendy, Lynette, Doris, Esther, Estelle, Lorna, his uncles; Dr Terrence Blackman and Horace Blackman, his great aunts and uncles; Jean, Jane, Thelma, Calvin, Pinkey, Deserie, Enid, Prince, Esmie and Evelyn and a host of extended cousins, family and dear friends. We embrace them all in the warmth and love of our village, their pain is unimaginable.

The Davis family has created a scholarship fund in Christian’s name and is seeking the community’s support.   The Christian Davis Memorial Fund will keep his dreams alive by providing an annual scholarship to a graduating senior from his beloved Alma Mater Elmont Memorial High School who has similar educational and entrepreneurial aspirations.
