KINGSTON,  – The reggae world is draped in mourning with the passing of Peter Anthony Morgan, the soulful lead singer of the Grammy award-winning reggae ensemble Morgan Heritage, at the tender age of 46.

His family shared the somber news of his departure on Sunday through a touching tribute on social media, leaving the cause of his untimely death unspoken, yet their message brimmed with love and gratitude for the legacy he leaves behind.

Known affectionately as ‘Peetah’ to friends, fans, and family alike, Morgan was the cornerstone of Morgan Heritage, a band forged in the fires of familial bonds and shared musical genius with his four siblings, all children of the famed reggae artist Denroy Morgan.

The group, including Una Morgan, Roy ‘Gramps’ Morgan, Nakhamyah ‘Lukes’ Morgan, and Memmalatel ‘Mr Mojo’ Morgan, under Peter’s leadership, has been a beacon of reggae music, offering songs that resonate with the soul’s deepest yearnings for love, unity, and freedom.

The sensational roots reggae quintet, Morgan Heritage comprises siblings Peetah Morgan (vocals), Una Morgan (keyboard/vocals), Roy “Gramps” Morgan (keyboard/vocals), Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan (rhythm guitar) and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan (percussion/vocals)

As the Morgan family navigates through this profound loss, they extend their heartfelt thanks to the countless fans and supporters who’ve stood by them, requesting privacy during this period of grief.

The news of Peter Anthony Morgan’s passing has sent ripples of sorrow throughout the music industry, touching the hearts of many around the world who found solace and joy in his music.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, took to X, expressing his deep sorrow over the loss of such a monumental figure in reggae music. “My heart is heavy,” he wrote, recognizing Morgan’s death as a monumental loss for both Jamaica and the global reggae community.

Peoples National Party (PNP) Spokesperson on Culture and Creative Industries, Dr Deborah Hickling Gordon, expressed profound shock and sadness at the news of the passing of the esteemed lead singer of the renowned grammy award winning group.

“The Morgan Family has lost a beloved husband, a father, son, and a brother. Morgan Heritage, recognised for their commitment to activism and social justice, drew inspiration from the teachings of Marcus Garvey and other influential Rastafarian leaders.

“Through their music, they shared messages of hope, unity, and empowerment, addressing critical issues such as poverty, oppression, inequality and love. Their platform inspired fans to contribute towards creating a better world.”

“The legacy of Peter Anthony Morgan will forever resonate through the timeless rhythms and messages of Morgan Heritage,” Dr. Hickling said.

Formed in 1994, Morgan Heritage, celebrated for their contribution to reggae with the Grammy-winning album “Strictly Roots” in 2016, has left an indelible mark on the music world.

Peter Anthony Morgan, alongside his brother Roy “Gramps” Morgan, who sought to blend reggae rhythms with the storytelling traditions of Nashville, has been a testament to the power of music in narrating the tales of human experience, struggle, and resilience.

Peter Anthony Morgan’s legacy is a testament to the power of music to unite, heal, and inspire across generations and borders.

As the reggae community and the world at large bid farewell to a true legend, his spirit will forever resonate in the chords of Morgan Heritage’s music, a beacon of hope and unity in times of darkness.
