A distinguished 14-person delegation from the United States, including state legislators, arrived this Monday to conduct a supportive and thorough fact-finding mission regarding allegations of racism, discrimination, and human rights violations in various communities.

Dee Dawkins-Haigler, the esteemed President and founder of the Organization of World Leaders, at a press conference at the Critchlow Labour College, affirmed that the delegation, equipped with reports from international bodies like the United Nations, is here to constructively investigate these serious allegations, particularly those affecting the Afro-Guyanese community.

Despite the Guyana Government’s skepticism about the delegation’s impartiality, Dawkins-Haigler, a respected former Chairperson of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, emphasized the team’s commitment to impartiality and thoroughness. They plan to visit communities including Mocha Arcadia, Linden, and New Amsterdam to firsthand assess the situation.

In response to media inquiries, Dawkins-Haigler confirmed the delegation’s plans to engage with key sectors, including the Private Sector Commission and the oil and gas industry, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the business climate and address concerns of alleged inequality in these sectors.

While acknowledging President Irfaan Ali’s decision not to meet with the delegation, Dawkins-Haigler expressed respect for his stance, highlighting her previous cordial interactions with him and reiterating the delegation’s openness to dialogue.

The delegation, which includes respected legislators and professionals, aims to compile an objective report based on widespread consultations, including interactions with the opposition and local organizations. This report will be shared with various international entities, including the United Nations and the U.S. Congress, underscoring the delegation’s commitment to promoting equality and unity.

Georgia State Senator Micheal Rhett, North Carolina Representative Dr. Amber Barker, and other notable members of the delegation are dedicated to understanding and addressing the concerns of the Guyanese people, reflecting their long-standing commitment to fostering equitable societies worldwide.

The Partnership for National Unity (APNU) councillors of the Region # 4 (Demerara-Mahaica) Regional Democratic Council (RDC) have, on Tuesday February 28, approved a motion of no confidence against Regional Executive Officer (REO) Donald Gajraj. The motion which cited maladministration and poor accountability was read by Councillor Hazel Pyle-Lewis. Following the reading of the motion, the REO -- who was appointed by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) -- walked out of the meeting followed by the PPP members of the Council. Mr. Gajraj is currently embroiled in controversy following an allegation of assault made by Regional Chairman Daniel Seeram. The elected regional chairman was reportedly assaulted by the REO during a Republic Day flag raising ceremony at the National Park on February 22. The public incident was recorded via video.
