Providence, East Bank Demerara – An alarming incident occurred on Thursday as a prominent section of Red Road suddenly bulged and exhibited significant cracking. This unexpected event prompted immediate rerouting of vehicular traffic, causing substantial disruptions.
In an urgent briefing, Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, drew attention to the gravity of the incident, stating that traffic on Red Road would now be restricted, starting from the Providence Public Road up to Massy’s supermarket. “It’s an unprecedented and deeply regrettable event. We extend our apologies to the public,” Minister Edghill expressed.
Experts believe the disturbance, which affected approximately 150 meters of the road, can be attributed to the tremendous weight of a 30,000-tonne aggregate stockpile positioned on the Providence Stadium’s parking lot extension. The bulge in the road is estimated to be between six to eight feet. Notably, this vast stockpile is under the ownership of the Ministry of Public Works.
Beyond the immediate concerns about road integrity, experts interviewed by this newspaper shared rising apprehensions over the structural stability of surrounding establishments, including hotels and commercial buildings, have emerged. This substantial ground movement might have implications, both seen and unseen, on their structural soundness. Concerns extend to underground utilities, including potential damage to water pipelines and fiber-optic cables.
Minister Edghill, addressing some of the concerns, stated that GTT and Guyana Water Incorporated would be promptly engaged to ensure that no subterranean utilities are endangered.
He also assured the public of swift remedial measures, “The entirety of the affected 150 meters of Red Road is unfortunately destroyed. Our immediate solutions encompass the redistribution of the current stockpile and a comprehensive reconstruction of the affected road segment.”
