In the realm of academic achievements, there are stories that shine brighter than others, stories that exemplify the essence of dedication, hard work, and unwavering determination. The journey of 17-year-old Malique Washington, an aspiring medical doctor who conquered an astounding 20 subjects at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is one such story that serves as a beacon of inspiration to students and professionals alike.

Malique Washington, a young and vibrant student whose journey towards becoming a medical doctor has been nothing short of extraordinary. Hailing from the small community of Union on the West Coast, Berbice, Washington’s dreams knew no bounds, as he embarked on his educational journey at the Rosignol Secondary School.

Washington’s passion for education, combined with his relentless dedication, set him on a trajectory of academic excellence that few could have predicted. He highlighted that his high school journey was not a bed of roses, as it was filled with a whirlwind of sleepless nights, rigorous study sessions, and a determination to excel in a spectrum of subjects.

“Life for me has always been quiet and resolute……It was truly not a bed of roses due to the fact that I’m only supported by one parent, i.e… my mother. Her resilience has taught me many life lessons and morals. I doubt whether she truly knows how blessed I am to have her as my mother,” Malique said.

Further he added, “balancing my academic life, personal life, and extracurricular life was difficult at times. It required strong discipline and dedication to achieve the personal goals that I set for myself. Time management was key to me creating this balance. I simply created a timetable in this regard.”

In dealing with challenges, he used several strategies.  “I utilised the internet to conduct research, bombarded teachers when I had questions or was unclear about a concept and gained access to books with similar concepts,” Washington told this publication.

In 2022, he wrote General Mathematics and gained grade one. So this year, he challenged himself with Additional Mathematics. He was the first student at the Rosignol Secondary school to ever attempt Additional Mathematics, as this was new to him and his classmates.  “I sought help from everyone who had sound knowledge of Mathematics. Thank God, I was successful at that subject,” he mentioned.

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is known for its rigorous examination system that tests students on a wide range of subjects. While most students typically undertake six to eight subjects, Washington’s ambitions led him to an unprecedented undertaking: 20 subjects. This audacious feat wasn’t without its challenges, as he had to juggle an immense workload, maintain his focus, and stay motivated in the face of overwhelming pressure. He was awarded the Top/Best Performance for Region Five.

‘All things are possible through Christ who strengthens me’ is a scripture from the Bible Washington used constantly to keep himself motivated.  “Overall, coping with 20 subjects was not a stroll in the park. However, this was a challenge that I was willing to take up, even though I knew to myself that there were going to be a lot of sleepless nights,” he stated.

“1. Always get assignments and other tasks assigned to you done before the deadline.

  1. Try your best to understand concepts rather than cram for exams.
  2. Create a study schedule and prioritise your activities.
  3. Use social media positively and try your best not to be distracted or to engage in any activity that may affect you in the future,” is Malique’s advice to any student who wishes to excel academically.

In the future, he aspires to further his studies in the field of science and pursue his childhood dreams of becoming a doctor of medicine, while his plan B is either petroleum or civil engineering.

Malique’s determination is a beacon for all those who dare to dream big. In him, we find not only a future medical professional but also a role model for anyone striving to achieve their goals, no matter how audacious they may seem.

Washington wishes to extend gratitude to all those who have played a role in his success.
