The Accused Minister was a Ticking Bomb waiting to Explode: The President, the Government and the Police have failed Guyana.

The recent allegation of rape against Guyana’s Minister of Local Government is yet another reminder of the consequences of Regime Change. Regime Change creates unaccountable government—a Runaway train. Unaccountable government leads to One-Party Gobernment and One-Party Government invariably degenerates into Dictatorship. That is where Guyana is today. And that is the context in which we must process the allegations against the Minister.

I am mindful that one is considered innocent util proven guilty. But this is a disrespectful Minister in an unaccountable Government. He was a time-bob waiting to explode. The Minister dishonored the National Assembly when he dishonored the women MPs on the Opposition side. Not a rebuke from the Speaker, the Leader of the House, the female Government MPs or the President.  No Opposition MP could have gotten away with that.  He was made to believe he is a law unto himself.  He once slandered me. He slandered one of his current lawyers.

He is still a law unto himself. Allegations of a serious offence against him did not propel the police or the president to act. His female colleagues muzzled themselves. So did his indigenous colleagues.  The President granted him “leave” after he was approached. The police arrested him after he turned himself in—there was no arrest warrant. The police granted him bail, so he could go home and sleep comfortably.  No shackles for him as was the case of Tacuma Ogunseye.

The President, the government, the female PPP Ministers and the Police have all failed Guyana. Twenty Indigenous children were killed because of the negligence of the government and the State. A fifteen-year-old child languishes in custody for this tragedy. Another Indigenous child is now allegedly the victim of another cruel act of the powerful. And the say, people like me have Race on my mind.
