Georgetown Mayor, His Worship Pt Ubraj Narine, recently participated in AIDO’s 5th Annual Ubuntu (Human Rights) 2023 Convention, held between May 24- May 28 in Mombasa, Kenya, Africa. This significant event, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights around the world, brought together prominent figures, community leaders, and organisations dedicated to advancing human rights.
According to Aido Network International (AIDO) website, the convention had a gathering of over 500 participants, comprising African traditional leaders, government officials and civil society representatives from all the regions of Africa. Also, “participants from the African diaspora and other civil society groups in the Caribbean, United States, United Kingdom and Europe; artists, youth representatives, journalists and faith leaders”
The mayor, speaking with Village Voice News about the event, said as a strong advocate for equality, justice, and the well-being of all citizens, he recognises the significance of the event, which has cemented his commitment to supporting initiatives that would foster a culture of human rights and inclusivity.
The event, he said, offered a platform to highlight the City of Georgetown’s commitment to human rights principles, emphasising the importance of respecting and protecting the dignity, freedom, and rights of every individual within the city limits. By attending the event, he “aims to inspire and encourage citizens to actively participate in building an inclusive society that promotes equality and justice for all.”
The event, he said, also provided an excellent opportunity for him to engage with like-minded individuals, share perspectives, and collaborate on strategies to promote a more equitable and compassionate society.
The mayor was presented the opportunity to deliver a keynote address, where he highlighted the city’s efforts to safeguard human rights, detailing ongoing projects, and outlining plans to address any existing challenges. He also participated in panel discussions and workshops, contributing valuable insights on various human rights issues affecting the community.
Ubraj asserts his commitment to public service, fostering positive change and creating a better future for the residents of the City of Georgetown. According to him, the passion for social justice, equality, and human rights has guided the leadership of the City Council in working to ensure Georgetown becomes an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.
