In a race against time, a young girl critically injured in the tragic Mahdia fire has been transported to the renowned Northwell Burns Center at Staten Island University Hospital in New York for urgent medical intervention. Today, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the patient, who had been under the care of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s (GPHC) Intensive Care Unit (ICU), was medically evacuated with the assistance of Global Rescue Air Ambulance.

Having been admitted to GPHC on May 22, 2023, the girl underwent two surgeries during her stay, showing gradual improvement in her critical condition. The decision to transfer her to a GPHC affiliate hospital under the esteemed Northwell Health Care umbrella was made in the best interest of the patient, considering the complex nature of her injuries.

Accompanied by her mother, the thirteen-year-old girl embarked on the journey to New York, departing from Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at approximately 2:25 p.m. today. The compassionate gesture of Northwell Hospital waived all costs for the necessary medical care, providing much-needed support to the mother during this challenging time.

In a demonstration of unwavering support, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues, who currently serves as Guyana’s UN Representative in New York, will be extending her assistance to the mother and child throughout their stay. A team from GPHC were present to ensure a seamless process.  Dr. Frank Anthony, and Advisor to the Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy also graced the departure ceremony to offer their support to the family.

Renowned for its excellence in burn treatment, the Northwell Burns Center in New York stands as one of the world’s premier facilities for burn victims. The Ministry of Health and GPHC wholeheartedly wish the young girl a swift and complete recovery.
