A 24-year-old shopkeeper was chopped across his left hand by a miner in Big Creek Backdam following a disagreement over a gold detector.
The injured man has been identified as Kevon Douglas, a shop keeper at Big Creek Backdam, North West District. Douglas also resides at Pakera Village, Matthews Ridges, North West District. The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, said Douglas was reportedly chopped by a 27-year-old miner at around 18:30hrs on Monday, November 9, 2020.
According to the police, Douglas and the suspect’s brother had a misunderstanding over a gold detector belonging to the gold miner. During the argument, the victim, reportedly took the gold detector, and it was then that the man went home and informed his brother – the suspect – about what had transpired.
It is alleged that the suspect armed himself with a cutlass and went to the victim and dealt him a chop to his left hand. The victim ran into a clump of bushes and the suspect went away.
Douglas was taken to the Matthews Ridges District Hospital, where he was treated and admitted. He was later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment.
On Tuesday, the suspect was apprehended at Big Creek Backdam at around 15:45. Pointing to the laceration on his head, the suspect told the police that Douglas chopped him first, and it was in retaliation that he chopped him.
He was told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested. The suspect was escorted to Matthews Ridges District Hospital where he was examined, treated and discharged by a nurse on duty, and was subsequently taken to Matthews Ridges Police Station where he was placed in custody. Investigations are ongoing.
