GECOM’s Failure to Deliver Fair Elections Sparks Urgent Need for Reform

According to the recent press statement from the opposition, GECOM’s “competence and integrity” are severely lacking when it comes to delivering free and fair elections in Guyana. Despite providing “hard evidence” of PPP’s electoral fraud, the commission has neglected its constitutional duty to ensure impartiality and fairness in the electoral process. As the opposition states, “Delivering fair and impartial elections is not the duty or obligation of neither the Guyana Police Force (GPF) nor the High Court. The Constitution explicitly places that responsibility fully in the lap of GECOM.”

The opposition also highlights GECOM’s apparent political bias and inconsistency in applying election rules, particularly in the cases of Woodlands-Bel Air and Wakenaam. As Commissioner Vincent Alexander notes, “The PPP/C appointed Commissioners along with the Chairperson are the ones who perpetrated this travesty of injustice.”

Given these concerns, the opposition warns that GECOM, in its current form, is not capable of delivering credible elections that can earn the trust and confidence of the Guyanese public and contesting groups. The press statement concludes that “Fixing the Guyana Elections Commission must begin now!”
