…to ease financial burden on patients

Region Ten’s first Dialysis Centre was on Friday commissioned by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony.

The centre, which is located at the Linden Hospital Complex, will now ease the financial burden on residents of Region 10 who journey to Georgetown multiple times weekly for dialysis.

Dialysis is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly.

The Minister of Health applauded the initiative and expressed hope that the Centre would provide high quality service to patients.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Linden Hospital Complex, Rudolph Small said there has been a steady increase in the number of persons suffering from diabetes and hypertension cases in Region 10. He said often time those cases advance to kidney failure.

“Patients had to be transferred to Georgetown for services so it was a strain on those patients who are Lindeners or those that are from Region 10, so we decided that we wanted to ensure that we could provide quality care for our patients by having a Dialysis Centre here,” Small said.

The initiative was made possible through a collaboration with the Ministry of Health and 5G Dialysis Centre.

The Centre is fitted with three dialysis machines, which were provided by the 5G Dialysis Centre and has two registered nurses who were trained by the 5G Dialysis Centre.

The 5G Dialysis Centre will also be providing technical and medical support to the clinic.

Meanwhile, Small disclosed that the process of selecting patients for subsidized service is still being reviewed. When that review process is completed, the CEO said the public will be notified about the service and how it can be accessed.

The Dialysis Centre will be opened from Monday to Saturday weekly.
