– had handed sister note just before incident

The 15-year-old son of Rondha-Ann Lam – the former Presidential Candidate of The Citizenship Initiative (TCI) – took his own life on Wednesday.

In statement, the police confirmed that the teen committed suicide at his parents’ Triumph, East Coast of Demerara home. Initial reports suggest that the teen used his father’s licensed weapon to commit the act. At the time of his death, he was living with his father, an Enforcement Officer at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA); his mother, a teacher; and two sisters and one brother.

According to the police, the alleged suicide occurred at around 14:45hrs on Wednesday.

“On October 28, 2020 [at] about 06:30hrs, the deceased’s father left home for work, leaving his licence firearm, a Glock 17 pistol with a number of matching rounds on a  top of a built-in closet which is located in his bedroom on the lower flat. His wife left shortly after for work, leaving the baby sitter alone with the deceased, his brother and sisters,” the police detailed.

One of the teen’s sisters, told the police that she was inside her room when her brother gave her a book page with writing before proceeding to his bedroom.

“As a result, she followed him and saw when he went into his haversack and took out a firearm and closed his bedroom door and shortly after she heard a gunshot. She went downstairs and told the baby sitter what she saw,” the police reported.

At the time, the baby sitter was with the other brother in the lower flat of the building, and upon learning about what had transpired, she immediately contacted the teen’s parents and the police.

Upon their arrival, the police processed the scene. A suspected gunshot wound was observed to the left side temple of the dead teen while an exit wound was seen on the right side. The firearm was next to his hand. A spent shell and aware head were also recovered.

The body was examined by a doctor who visited the home and pronounced the 15-year-old dead.  It was afterwards escorted to Lyken funeral home awaiting P.M.E. The investigation is ongoing.

As news spread of the tragic incident, Lam’s friends and family offered their condolences.
