My family and I had an interesting experience last week Sunday. This was in response to a medical emergency in Queen Street, Kitty.
Arrived promptly, was the ambulance with a crew of three Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), two males, one female, Ms. O Crandon, Mr T. Forde and Mr. Shawn Mc Kenzie.
After securing the well-being of the 88 years old woman, they took her to the GPHC, where she was seen by the doctor on duty and admitted.
The work of these EMTs, were of the highest quality, they displayed vintage professionalism, compassion and kindness.
Similar qualities were displayed by the attending Physician, Dr. James.
The ambulance service and Guyana ought to be proud of this high quality of service and care witnessed last week Sunday.
The high quality of their performance forced me to send this letter to the media at a time when frontline health workers remuneration is under active consideration.
If the efficiency of these three EMTs represents the norm, then no one should hesitate to giving such workers an appropriate incentive.
A society is enhanced when we show appreciation to those who perform beyond the call of duty.
They tell us that since the Phoenicians invented the coin, there is no better way to reward people who perform selflessly.
Before taking her to the hospital, they ensured that she was in a proper condition before embarking on the journey. We were all impressed.
In our society today, we must not commit the mistake of taking those who work so well for granted and I hope that the Minister responsible for Health and the Management of the Ambulance Service take cognizance of what I describe as performance of excellence.
