Government is using divide-and-conquer tactics to maintain power and control

Dear Editor,

As a concerned citizen of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, I am deeply troubled by the actions of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government under H.E. Irfaan Ali. Over the past six months or more, it has become increasingly clear that this government is using divide-and-conquer tactics to maintain power and control.

Perception of Bias Threatens Barima Inquiry’s Credibility

Racism has reared its ugly head in our country once again, with the government using black law enforcement officers to punish and harass their fellow black citizens. The recent incident in Mocha, where the livelihoods of black residents were destroyed by predominantly black police officers, is a heart-wrenching example of this.

Furthermore, a number of opposition MPs have been suspended from Parliament and the matter has ended up in court. It is clear that the court hearings have been unduly favourable to the Speaker, Anil Nandall, and the government. A closer examination of these proceedings would reveal a disturbing truth.

The decisions made by the presiding judge in these cases can be seen as political rulings in favor of the government. This is a clear case of black people oppressing other black people. It has been alleged the judge may have a familial connection to the government.

There are African Guyanese, all for a few crumbs from the master’s table and a handful of rental contracts would do anything. Between 2009 and 2015, such a person was used by the PPP to endorse the PPP, give speeches, and make donations (such as to hospitals) to sway African Guyanese to support the PPP. There was a major falling out with that person and a PPP leader who used threatening language towards the person. The conversation was caught on tape and widely circulated.

It is known the person has had a long and close friendship with HE Irfaan Ali. Because of this friendship, he continues to be at the PPP’s beck and call.

I call on all Guyanese to see the PPP for what they truly are.

The cries of the poor and affected are heard throughout our country. This individual and others like him continue to allow themselves to be used as pawns by this government, a government that cares less for one race over another. I urge my fellow citizens to use our pens and our observations to expose the truth of what is happening in our country. There are many more individuals like the businessman who are under siege by the PPP. The influence of these individuals is immense within certain circles in Guyana, and they must be held accountable for their actions.

I sincerely hope that the businessman will open his eyes to the bigger picture and take a stand for the rights and well-being of all Guyanese, not just for his own personal gain.

Yours truly,

Navin Brijlall
