A six-month-old baby girl died in a car accident that occurred on Unity Public Road in East Coast Demerara at around 1:30 AM on Monday, January 2nd, 2022. The accident involved two vehicles: a motorcar driven by 31-year-old Davin Butts of Mahaicony and a motorcar driven by Ackeem Jerricks of Sparendaam Housing Scheme, both located in East Coast Demerara. At the time of the accident, Jerricks was accompanied by 27-year-old Dequan Khan and the six-month-old Devine Khan, both of whom lived on Lot 61 West Road in Sparendaam.

According to the police investigation, the motorcar driven by Jerricks was traveling west on the southern lane of Unity Public Road when the motorcar driven by Butts, who was allegedly proceeding east on the northern lane, fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of his vehicle. The motorcar driven by Butts then collided with the front of Jerricks’ vehicle. All drivers and passengers were transported to Georgetown Public Hospital, where Devine Khan was pronounced dead upon arrival. Butts sustained head injuries, Jerricks sustained a leg injury, and Dequan Khan sustained injuries to his body. All three are currently being treated at the hospital.

The police were notified of the accident at around 1:43 AM on January 2nd, and Sergeant Fraser and Lance Corporal Wilson arrived at the scene two minutes later. Both vehicles have been impounded for further examination as the investigation continues. The tragic death of the six-month-old baby has shaken the community and our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.
