24 year old grade 6 teacher, Kerryann Rose hails from the community of Lima Sands in Essequibo.  Ms Rose shared with us that, “my learners at Lima Sands’ Learning pod, always look forward to our STEM sessions. My learners at the pod especially the little ones will ask me first thing in the morning “Miss today is STEM class?” and whatever my answer, they will not be satisfied, so they will look for me in the afternoons to ask the same question again. This happens every week”.

The anecdote reported to this newspaper reflects the essence of a teacher who loves her role and who has been able to convey her excitement for teaching to her students.  Indeed, all of our research indicates that if a teacher is enthusiastic about teaching and learning, her students will be also.  In an era where students affected by the pandemic or poverty or lack of interest are dropping out of school, we thought it important to highlight those teachers who motivate students to love learning.  Ms Kerryann Rose is one of those teachers.

Teacher Kerryann shared that she enjoys listening to music and sleeping when time permits.  She reports that she was excited about the opportunity she was given be a part of STEMGUyana’s family when her School was introduced to STEM in 2021.  She shared that although the role was challenging at first, especially following the timetable, she persisted and she believes that her students have benefited significantly because of it.  Ms Rose reported that, “the subject areas of focus at the pod are similar to those which I teach in my classroom and having taught at all the levels in the primary system, I am much more confidence in ensuring that each learner achieves the academic benefits the program is designed to provide”

Despite the challenges that came with being able to deliver, guide and coach each learner at her pod, Teacher Kerryann reports that, ” I was able to learn a few things too, especially in the area of technology. I took up this mantle because I know my pupils and the pupils in our community at large will benefit and that fuels me to keep going.”  Ms Rose shared that she has already observed that her learners have benefited from improved problem solving skills, team management and improved academic outcomes since they were given the opportunity to be part of the IDB & Tullow Oil sponsored STEMGuyana Learning pods program.

Teacher Kerryann ends by expressing the view that great achievements always require great sacrifice, so she is happy to juggle her family and work duties and to find time for her pod duties because in the end her learners benefit and that makes her exceedingly happy.
