Roston Chase made an unbeaten half-century as Barbados Pride made a winning start to their CG United Super50 Cup campaign by easily defeating West Indies Academy by six wickets.

In pursuit of a modest 214 at Coolidge Cricket Ground on Tuesday, Pride overhauled their target at the start of the 45th over, with Chase ending on 86 not out from 81 balls which included nine fours and four sixes.

Zachary McCaskie added a classy 71 from 93 balls at the top of the order, as Pride coasted to the points. Keagan Simmons had earlier top-scored with 64 from 81 balls while Kevin Wickham made an attractive 52 from 57 balls but West Indies Academy were dismissed for 213 at the start of the 47th over.

In the day’s other match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium: all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall hit a whirlwind half-century as Leeward Islands Hurricanes racked up a second straight win with a convincing 68-run triumph over Jamaica Scorpions. With the hosts in deep trouble at 76-5 in the 20th over, Cornwall arrived to blast 81 from 72 balls to get his side up to 270-9 off their 50 overs.

The right-hander thumped seven fours and five sixes, dominating a 120-run, sixth wicket stand with Terance Warde (32) which pulled the innings around and pushed it beyond the competitive 250-run mark.

West Indies white-ball all-rounder Hayden Walsh (31) and Kofi James (25) followed up with cameos, building on promising knocks by Devon Thomas (38) and Ross Powell (27) in an opening stand of 61 before five wickets tumbled for just 15 runs. (West Indies Cricket)
