Gov’t to pay $28,000 one-off grant to pensioners

Government on Thursday announced each old age pensioner will receive a one-off $28,000 cash-grant before year end. The one-off grant is estimated to cost $1.8 billion.

The Irfaan Ali two-year administration has increased the old age pension from $22,500 to 28,000.  However, escalating cost of living is causing people to spend more, thereby eroding income.

For instance:-

A bottle of cooking gas in two years has moved from $3500 to $ 5000.
A bottle of cooking oil that sold for $1400 is now $4000
A 50lb bag of flour that sold last year at $3800 is presently selling at $5000
A bag of rice that previously sold for $1200 is now $2200
A pound of sugar that last year cost $100 is now selling at $300
