Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held talks on a number of issues that are of global and regional significance yesterday.

Trudeau met with Santokhi, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Caribbean Community, on the margins of the 77th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.

“The two leaders discussed the President’s priorities in this role, including collaborating with regional partners to support Haiti’s stability and sustainable development. President Santokhi thanked Canada for bringing together CARICOM leaders and key stakeholders to advance a Haitian-led solution,” a readout of the meeting from Trudeau’s office said.

On the issue of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, both leaders agreed that the Kremlin’s actions were “unjustifiable” and “undermined the rules-based international order and exacerbated the food and energy security crisis experienced around the world.”

They discussed the importance of delivering principled support for Ukraine and building long-term resiliency to these pressing challenges.

The readout said Trudeau and Santokhi expressed their support for broader access to concessional financing for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ahead of the important COP27 and COP15 summits set to take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt in November and Montréal, Canada in December.

On the local front, Trudeau and Santokhi are hoping to build strong, resilient, and inclusive post-COVID economies as the relationship between both countries are improving. (Caribbean Loop)
