Citizens are today holding a Day Of Protest against economic discrimination, extra judicial killings, government corruption, electoral fraud and racial discrimination The protest will be held at Buxton public road on the East Coast of Demerara, starting at 10:00 a.m.

At the same time (10:00 a.m) eight ministers of government are expected to be at the Buxton Community Centre meeting with residents. The Citizens Day of Protest was planned well in advance of the Government’s meeting. Observers are wondering if the government did not have prior knowledge of this protest, is attempting to usurp or prevent the protest by meeting with villagers in Buxton.

There have been several complaints of racial and political discrimination under the President Irfaan Ali’s government. African Guyanese and non-African Guyanese who are supporters of the opposition, the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change, have made such complaints. Regional and Local Democratic authorities not won by the People’s Progressive Party have complained of being denied enough resources (financial and otherwise) to execute work in their communities.

The 2020 Elections remain marred in controversy and the legitimacy of the government is facing challenge via election petitions which are in the courts. Since the PPP returned to government Guyana signalled a return to increasing corruption based on the 2021 Transparency International Corruption Index which recorded Guyana increasing in corrupt practices by two points.
