The police have launched an investigation into the robbery of a businessman and his son by four men, one armed with a handgun, on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD). The incident took place on Monday, September 28, and the men carted away with over GYD $2.2 million.

The businessman of Canal #1, WB, is 64-year-old Narinedeo Jairam while his son is 40-year-old of Ammardatt Jairam of Noitegedacht, Canal #1, WBD. According to police reports, Jairam had just returned home from conducting business at Gafoor’s, WBD, and was eating breakfast in a hammock beneath his house when, between 10:30 and 10:50 hours, four identifiable males of East Indian descent, entered his yard. They were masked with rags around their faces and one was armed with a hand gun.

The men approached him and the suspect armed with the gun dealt him one blow to the left side of his forehead which began to bleed profusely. The suspect then sat on the man, while one of the other men grabbed on to his domestic worker, 48-year-old Kristamattie called ‘Devi’. They dealt her several blows about her body causing her to receive injuries to her left side chin, all while demanding the keys for the house.

The suspects, after getting a hold of the keys, went into the house and to a cannister which was secured with a lock and contained GYD $2.2 million. The robbers broke the lock and removed the said sum. At the time, Jairam’s son was making his way into the yard and encountered the four men as they were making their way out of the yard. They also relieved him of GYD$200,000.

The men then made good their escape in a waiting white motor car in an eastern direction. The Jairam and the domestic worker were both treated at the Canal Health Center for injuries received and sent away. Investigations are continuing.
