LEONORA, Guyana – An eight-goal affair with first place implications ended in a Haiti 6-2 victory over Guyana in Group B of League B of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League at
the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora, Guyana.
The scoring started early, as a goal kick from Haiti GK Jhony Placide made for a long ball into the box in the fourth minute, upon which Carnejy Antoine headed the service forward to
Dany Jean, who was denied, but Simonsen Jeppe Friborg converted on the rebound for the opening goal.
A corner kick led to the second goal just five minutes later, as Steeven Saba smashed the
second chance opportunity to extend the lead for the visitors in the ninth minute to 2-0.
Almost immediately Guyana responded. An interception in midfield sparked a counterattack and Emery Welshman cut the deficit down to 2-1 with a clinical touch in the 11th minute.
Haiti countered with an interception of their own to take a 3-1 lead in the 38th minute, with Antoine serving as the scorer on this occasion with a well-placed header.
Derrick Etienne Jr. then got into the act with two goals in three minutes, capping off a
successful breakaway for the visitors in the 41 st minute for a 4-1 lead. As Haiti kept
pressing, Etienne Jr. was clinical once more to complete his brace in the 43 rd minute and make it a 5-1 affair.
Guyana would not go into the halftime break without responding once more. Nathan Moriah-Welsh hit a long-range shot just at the top of the half-oval in the 44th minute for a halftime score of 5-2.
The second half was much quieter on the scoresheet but not for lack of attempts, including an Omari Glasgow shot on goal in the 52nd as the home side looked for the comeback.
The only goal of the second half though came from Haiti’s Fredler Christopher in the 80th minute, allowing Haiti to take the 6-2 victory and the three points to jump Guyana in the
group standings.
Haiti stands in first place with seven points and 2-1-0 record. Guyana falls to second in the group with six points and now hold a 2-0-1 mark.
