I was told a very long time ago that give a man a fish and he eats for a day but teach a man to fish and he eats for life.

It appears to me, editor, that our Government did not hear this. I say this when I look at the series of grants given to selected sections of Guyanese. I should add that though I recognise those offered support are in dire need does the doling out of monies really alleviate their woes?

Certainly it will help them in the short term but the vicious cycle will confront them again. Will the Government come again to the rescue? I know I may be demonized for my sentiments but I see Government engineering a situation whereby it is creating an army of mendicants in our country that live for the charity of the leaders. I wonder whether our independence really means anything as this is what we fought against during the colonial times.

Of course while many celebrate the few dollars here and there, the crumbs thrown from the table pale in comparison to what the business sector gets and will receive.

Yours sincerely
Liebert Alleyne
