A leaf sensor is a phytometric device (measurement of plant physiological processes) that measures water loss or the water deficit stress (WDS) in plants by real-time monitoring the moisture level in plant leaves.  Photometric devices measure the physiological responses of a plant or group of plants to various environmental factors.

The leaf sensor approximates the thermal mass and radiative properties of leaves to closely mimic the wetness state of a real leaf. The way it works is simple: if the canopy is wet, the sensor is wet; if the canopy is dry, the sensor is dry. The LWS measures the dielectric constant of the top of the sensor.

Leaf sensor monitor and Irrigation products allow farmers to monitor plant moisture levels in leaves in real-time and to (automatically) activate irrigation and water systems. These sensors work on all plants and are suitable for Vineyards, Greenhouses, Golf Courses, Lawns, Farmers, Hobbists, Educators, Agronomists and Consultants. Essentially, leaf sensors know when to water and help farmers to improve yield while conserving water.
