Two men – Vinod Gopaul called ‘Magga’ and Anil Sancharra called ‘Dan Pole’ and ‘Rasta’ – have been committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of Joel and Isaiah Henry – two cousins whose badly mutilated bodies were found dumped in a clump of bushes in the backlands of Cotton Tree Village in September 2020.

The trio charged for the murder of the teen cousins – Joel and Isaiah Henry

Gopaul, 34, is a resident of Yakusari, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice while Sancharra, 33, hails from D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice.

The murder accused appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (March 1).

During that hearing, Magistrate ruled that sufficient a case was made out against both murder accused by the Police Legal Advisor Mandel Moore.  Gopaul and Sancharra, who are among three accused of murdering the teenage cousins, were committed to stand trial at the next convenient sitting at the Berbice Assizes.

Gopaul and Sancharra were jointly charged and remanded to prison on Friday, January 15, 2021 for the murders of Isaiah and Joel Henry in the Cotton Tree ‘backdam’, West Coast Berbice. The defendants were represented by Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd and associates.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Akash Singh called ‘Monkey’ – the third murder accused – has been charged separately for the gruesome crime. He is the younger brother of Sancharra.

The cousins, Isaiah and Joel Henry, were found murdered on September 6, one day after they ventured into the No. 3 Village backdam.

A post-mortem found that the two teenage cousins had died of haemorrhage and shock, due to multiple incised wounds. They sustained severed spines, along with multiple chops about the bodies. A huge ‘X’ was carved on Isaiah’s head while Joel’s chest was cut open.
