“Last year we saw more women utilising the service, which means that more women are becoming aware of cancer, and that early detection can save their lives. This year, we look forward to more women taking advantage of this free service to know their status and acting swiftly where necessary,” Gittens said according to a GTT release.

National VIA Coordinator at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Martin Campbell thanked GTT for its steady support in raising cancer awareness and providing the means to free pap smear screening in Guyana.

While the Chronic Disease unit of the Ministry of Health has started observance of cervical cancer awareness month with Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) screening and awareness activities, in a bid to promote the early detection of cancer across various regions, the team will now include free pap smears screening in other communities.

The one-month observance began at the Kwakwani Health Centre, Laluni Health Post, Kuru kururu Health Centre and Goed Intent Health Centre.
The free pap smear along with the additional services will be offered at various health clinics in regions three, four, five, six, and ten, as well as engagements with various religious organisations, community groups and NGO’s until February 11.

According to Gittens, GTT will communicate with the public via SMS when the team will be in their area to allow women to capitalise on the services.
