CEO allegedly calls Christ Church teachers waste

—says to “to hell with Covid’

Chief Education Officer, Marcel Hutson is reported to have told teachers of the Christ Church Secondary School that they are waste and downplayed their fear about the surge in the Covid-19 pandemic here.
In a press release on Wednesday the Guyana Teachers’ Union said it was informed by staff and students of Christ Church Secondary of the unacceptable behaviour at the school by Chief Education Officer Dr. Marcel Hutson over COVID 19 related matters.
“The report stated that the Chief Education Officer screamed at teachers, saying, “to hell with Covid, teachers at the school are waste,” GTU said in the release.

“The union wishes to ascertain whether the abusive words uttered by the Chief Education Officer are the Ministry’s position on teachers who are out amidst the COVID 19 pandemic doing their best under these circumstances. The GTU condemns the abusive behavior in the most robust possible way and urges that the Chief Education Officer return immediately to the school and publicly apologize to the staff and students who bore witness to his unacceptable rantings yesterday.” “We expect an officer of Dr. Hutson’s status to treat teachers better since he is a product of the school system and ought to know better. Further, we demand that the school be closed immediately to facilitate testing and sanitizing its environment. The CEO’s instruction to have the school remain open breaches his own COVID 19 protocol issued in 2021,” the Union stated.
