Thursday’s Statutory Meeting of the Region Four Regional Democratic Council (RDC) was prematurely adjourned after it was discovered that one of the councilors was exposed to COVID-19.

According to the Regional Chairman, the Councilor though fully aware of the COVID-19 concern turned up to the statutory meeting nonetheless.

“I am deeply disturbed and disappointed by the reckless and callous actions of the Regional Councillor which resulted in the premature adjournment of a critical statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), DemeraraMahaica (Region No.4) on Thursday,” Seeram said in a statement.

It was explained that the Councillor was identified through contact tracing as one of several persons who was required to be quarantined as a result of being exposed to COVID-19.

According to the Regional Chairman, the Councillor was among councilors who attended a meeting with Regional Executive Officer (REO), Donald Gajraj in his office on Wednesday afternoon.

The REO subsequently informed the Office of the Regional Chairman that he was exposed to COVID-19 and would be unable to attend the statutory meeting.

“Contact was made with all the Councillors who attended the meeting and they were told to quarantine and await their COVID-19 test results as required by the COVID-19 guidelines. Regrettably, the Councillor chose to attend today’s statutory meeting potentially jeopardising the health and wellbeing of all in attendance. Despite several requests for  the Councillor to excuse himself and proceed into quarantine, he refused to leave. I therefore, in the interest and wellbeing of all present, adjourned the meeting,” the Regional Chairman said.
