The People’s National Congress extends greetings to all Muslim devotees and to Guyanese citizens everywhere on the occasion of the joyous festival of Eid ul-Fitr – the festival of breaking-the-fast.

Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most sacred festivals of the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan during which Muslims performed acts of abstinence, fasting, devotion and self-denial.

Eid-ul-Fitr reminds us of the relationship between divine worship, personal sacrifice and social responsibility. It compels devotees to continue to be compassionate to one another. The festival’s expressions of generosity and kindness to fellow citizens sustain social cohesion.

Eid-ul-Fitr emphasizes the values of temperance and perseverance during the holy month of Ramadan which provided a time for devotees to reflect on their spirituality, to reaffirm their faith and to reinforce the ideals that bind the nation together. The Holy Koran teaches: “Humanity is but a single brotherhood: So make peace with your brethren.”

Eid-ul-Fitr is significant to everyone. The festival’s exuberance, regrettably, will be tempered by the personal and social restrictions which have been imposed, out of necessity, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic has witnessed sacrifices by our medical and essential workers in their efforts to ensure the health and safety of others.

The People’s National Congress joins Muslims everywhere in celebrating our faith and fellowship.
Eid Mubarak!
