Reparations for African Slavery Must Not Be Reduced to a General Development Agenda for Guyana

New Building Society management came to public attention when certain senior operatives were sent off because they stuck to the rules that governed NBS and refused to comply with what were pure politically inspired directives with respect to monies for the Berbice Harbour Bridge Project.

This matter saw the stress and strain applied to decent men and their families. A few weeks ago, Attorney Leon Oswald Rockcliffe “GUN” passed away.

Earlier, he was the only Afro-Guyanese on the Board of the NBS and suffered a similar faith to the men who were sent off. Rockcliffe resigned as he told some of us because he could not in good conscience, function in an environment where political and racial considerations seem to dominate.

As I congratulate Mc Donald, we cannot help recalling the book titled “The Spook who sat by the Door.” His appointment is no more than tokenism and one is reminded of the story of a white dominated enterprise in the US who appointed an Afro-American to a high office, only to present a false picture that they are not racist.

I could not help remembering that book as I read of Mr. Mc Donald’s appointment. Genuine Patriots must be alert to this kind of deception by the powers that be. Guyanese must not be fooled by persons and institutions who present these fronts when it is business as usual.

Regards
Eric Moseley, MS
