The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) will host a National Consultation on Constitutional  Reform and the ERC’s Draft Glossary of Ethnically Sensitive Terms on Tuesday, October 13,  2026, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The consultation forms part of the Commission’s commitment to promoting harmony and good  relations among Guyana’s diverse ethnic communities and will provide an opportunity for citizens  and stakeholders to contribute their views on matters relevant to the ERC’s constitutional mandate.

The principal focus of the consultation will be constitutional reform, particularly matters relating  to ethnic relations, equality, inclusion, protection from discrimination, ethnic security, and the role  and effectiveness of institutions established to support those objectives.

Participants will engage in structured discussions through 11 groups, comprising 10 constituency  groups and one public participation group. These discussions are intended to garner  recommendations on constitutional matters relevant to the remit and mandate of the ERC.

The recommendations emerging from the consultation will be consolidated by the ERC into a  report for submission to the Constitutional Reform Commission (CRC) before its December 31,  2026 deadline.

ERC Glossary of Ethnically Sensitive Terms

The consultation will also include a brief introduction to the ERC’s Draft Glossary of Ethnically  Sensitive Terms, a public education resource intended to promote greater understanding of  language and terminology relating to ethnicity and its potential impact on social relations.

Participants will have an opportunity to provide feedback, at a later date, on the Draft Glossary as  part of the broader consultation process.

Citizens are encouraged to participate based on their experiences, perspectives and ideas for  strengthening equality, inclusion and harmonious relations in Guyana.

The consultation is open to the public, and the ERC encourages all community organisations, civil  society groups and other stakeholders to participate in this important consultation.

Persons interested in attending can currently register by visiting the ERC Guyana social media  pages, @ERCGuyana, where the registration link and further information are available.

The ERC looks forward to broad public participation as Guyana continues its national conversation  on constitutional reform and the strengthening of harmony and good relations.
