Sixteen-year-old Guyanese chess champion Sachin Pitamber produced a standout performance for Guyana at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, drawing with Cyprus Grandmaster Andreas Kelires.
Playing on Board One for Guyana’s Open team, Pitamber, rated 1,991, held the 2,532-rated Kelires to a draw after a fiercely contested game. The result extended Pitamber’s unbeaten run at the tournament and represented a significant performance against a player more than 500 rating points above him.
Guyana’s Open team nevertheless lost the round to Cyprus 3½–½. The Women’s team produced a stronger result, recording three wins and a draw against St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Olympiad continues in Samarkand, with Guyana’s Open team scheduled to face Macau, China, while the women take on Hong Kong, China
