Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters won silver in the men’s javelin at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Peters produced a best throw of 86.18 metres during his second attempt at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre to secure second place for Grenada.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the inaugural title with a spectacular final-round throw of 91.09 metres, while Germany’s Julian Weber finished third with 85.89 metres.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott finished fourth with 82.41 metres, giving the Caribbean a strong presence in the final.
Peters’ remaining throws were recorded at 80.18m, 84.15m and 82.63m. His 86.18m effort was enough to secure the silver medal.
The result adds another major international medal to Peters’ career. He won the world championship title in 2022 with a throw of 90.54 metres and claimed silver at the 2025 World Championships. He also won Olympic bronze at Paris 2024.
Speaking after Sunday’s competition, Peters said he was pleased with his 86.18m performance, particularly compared with his result at the same stage the previous year.
The Budapest competition was the first World Athletics Ultimate Championship, a new end-of-season event bringing together leading Olympic and world champions and other top performers.
The three-day championship featured 381 athletes from 65 federations and carried a record US$10 million prize pool.
Peters’ silver provides another significant achievement for Grenada, a small Caribbean nation with a remarkable record in international athletics.
His performance also contributed to a strong Caribbean showing in Budapest, with Walcott representing Trinidad and Tobago in the same final.
For Grenada, Peters’ latest podium finish reinforces his status as one of the region’s leading field athletes and one of the country’s most successful representatives on the global sporting stage.
