Early morning technical problems at Berbice River bridge snarl traffic for nearly two hours

A technical problem at the Berbice River Bridge which caused a buildup of vehicles on both sides of the river this morning from 0720 hrs was resolved at 0830 hrs.

A commuter from East Berbice told Village Voice that according to a release by the Berbice Bridge Company the bridge should have been closed to vehicular traffic between 0600 and 0720hrs but when he showed up with his vehicle at 0730 hrs expecting it to be opened by then, he was confronted with a mile long stretch of parked vehicles.

He said that on being asked, the authorities at the Bridge disclosed that it had developed a technical problem and that a maintenance team was working on resolving the problem.

He said that himself and other stranded motorists were happy to observe that the problem was resolved around 0830 hrs and traffic resumed the normal flow across the bridge about 0845 hrs.

The commuter observed that it would be appreciated if the public can be given advance notice about work on these maintenance issues before- hand so as to minimize stress and inconvenience to the public, particularly those stranded without any inkling of what was happening or when the situation would be resolved
