The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed profound sadness over the capsizing of the MV Barima and pledged its support to Guyana as authorities continue an intensive search-and-rescue operation for dozens of passengers still missing.
In a statement issued Sunday, the regional bloc said it was closely monitoring developments following the maritime disaster off Guyana’s Atlantic coast near the Pomeroon River.
“The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply saddened by the capsizing of the passenger ferry, MV Barima, off the Atlantic coast near the Pomeroon River,” the statement said.
The MV Barima, a passenger ferry built in 1939, was carrying 116 passengers on its regular Georgetown-to-Port Kaituma voyage when it transmitted a distress signal late Saturday night near Iron Punt before capsizing. By Sunday morning, 53 people had been rescued, while search-and-rescue efforts for the remaining 63 passengers were continuing under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips.
The vessel, despite its advanced age, was reportedly equipped with 250 life jackets and multiple life rafts. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the effectiveness of the vessel’s safety equipment.
CARICOM said it continues to closely follow the rescue operation and expressed concern for those still unaccounted for.
“The Community continues to closely follow the ongoing search and rescue operation to account for the passengers and crew. We extend our prayers and support to the families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.”
The regional organisation also commended the emergency responders and volunteers involved in the rescue effort.
“CARICOM pays tribute to the courage, dedication and selfless efforts of the rescue teams and all who are responding in the aftermath of the incident, led by relevant arms of the Government of Guyana, and including private vessel operators, who mobilized overnight in challenging conditions to save lives.“
Since the distress call was received, the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, the Maritime Administration Department, private vessels and volunteers have joined the search operation, which has continued by sea and air.
CARICOM concluded by reaffirming its support for Guyana during the unfolding tragedy.
“CARICOM stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Guyana, in particular, the families and communities that are being impacted by this unfolding disaster.”
The MV Barima disaster is among Guyana’s most serious maritime emergencies in recent years, prompting a large-scale rescue effort and renewed scrutiny of maritime safety and emergency preparedness.
