In response to the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that China has always upheld a fair and impartial stance and “supports all efforts that are conducive to peace”.

Beijing supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and national dignity, and in improving its relations with Gulf countries and those in the region, Guo said at a daily news conference in Beijing.

“China is willing to continue providing assistance in its own way and playing a constructive role in restoring peace and stability to the region at an early date,” he said.

He noted that the US-Iran memorandum of understanding commits both sides to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, refraining from any military actions, and avoiding interference in each other’s internal affairs.

“This sends a positive signal to the outside world, which should be jointly upheld and implemented,” he added.
