Value, Dialogue, and Social Commitment

Fair play is a fundamental ethical principle that goes far beyond simply following the rules. It emphasizes integrity, respect, and equal opportunities in competitive environments, requiring participants to treat others honestly, avoid cheating, and gracefully accept both victory and defeat. – (UNESCO).

Sport has proven to be a cost-effective and flexible tool in promoting peace and development objectives.  World Fair Play Day is an annual global observance celebrated every year on May 19. It celebrates the core ethical values of sports such as friendship, respect, equality, and integrity both on and off the field.  The day was first observed in 2025 after the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclamation.  By recognizing the spirit of fair play and the values it embodies in both sports and everyday life, the resolution emphasizes the role of sports, including for persons with disabilities, in fostering peace, development, community cohesion, gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls.  

The UN resolution further reaffirms the independence of sports and the leadership roles of the International Olympic and Paralympics Committees in their respective movements, urging the global community to recognize and raise awareness of World Fair Play Day.  Fair play speaks to the promotion of the practice of sport with a spirit of friendship, solidarity, tolerance and inclusion, and without discrimination. 

This year’s theme is “Values, Dialogue, and Social Commitment”. This theme highlights how fair play extends beyond the sporting arena to promote public ethics, solidarity, dialogue, and mutual respect in all of civil society. Fair play fosters mutual respect among participants, teaching us to value and honor one another. It promotes equality, bridges cultural divides, and empowers young people by showcasing how sports can drive social change and build stronger, more cohesive communities.

Sport and fair play embody values of solidarity, friendship, and tolerance. Through these values, sport and fair play can lead to social cohesion, inclusion, and understanding – transcending language and borders.

Core Pillars of Fair Play

Integrity and Honesty: Playing and competing without cheating, lying, or utilizing illegal advantages (such as performance-enhancing drugs in sports or financial manipulation in business).

Respect: Demonstrating unconditional respect for written rules, unwritten rules, opponents, teammates, officials, and fans.

Equal Opportunity: Ensuring that all competitors or individuals are given a fair and level playing field so that skills can be accurately measured.

Solidarity and Tolerance: Supporting teammates, accepting decisions you may not agree with, and behaving with self-control.

Modesty: Being a gracious winner who does not gloat, tease, or celebrate excessively.

Embracing Fair Play

Embracing the principle of fair play in any culture must be intentional.  Fair play is considered the cornerstone of healthy competition. In sports, it safeguards the integrity of the game and ensures that matches are safe and enjoyable for everyone involved. In broader society, it prevents the mentality of “success at any price” and lays the groundwork for inclusion, equality, and mutual trust.  Fair play celebrates the values that sport provides, encouraging respect, equality and integrity.  Fair play is a complex concept that encompasses fundamental values integral to both sport and everyday life, including fair competition, respect, friendship, team spirit, impartiality, and integrity. Fair play fosters mutual respect among participants, teaching us to value and honor one another. It promotes equality, bridges cultural divides, and empowers young people by showcasing how sports can drive social change and build stronger, more cohesive communities.  The declaration acknowledges the spirit of fair play while contributing to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  Everyone benefits by embracing the principles of fair play adherence to rules, respect for opponents, and the fight against violence and doping.
