The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) extends warm Arrival Day greetings to all Guyanese as we join in commemorating this important national observance, a day dedicated to honouring the diverse peoples whose journeys, sacrifices, and labour helped build the nation we proudly call home.
Arrival Day reminds us of the significance of May 5, 1838, when the Whitby arrived on the shores of then British Guiana with the first group of East Indian indentured labourers. But this day represents far more than one chapter in our history. It is a time to recognise all those who came to this land—whether through ancient migration, in chains as enslaved Africans, as indentured labourers from India, China, Portugal and Africa, or as voluntary migrants in search of a better life and opportunity.
Each arrival story—whether born of force, hardship or hope—is part of the fabric of the Guyanese story.
These communities, through their endurance, sacrifices and labour, laid the foundation for the social, political and economic development of Guyana. Their struggles and triumphs helped shape the resilient and diverse society we inherit today.
The GTUC pays tribute to our ancestors and honours their descendants, recognising the invaluable contributions they made and continue to make to the building of this nation.
Arrival Day is also a reminder that regardless of how our foreparents arrived, every Guyanese stands equal in dignity, worth and entitlement to opportunity.
As we reflect on our shared history, the GTUC renews its call for an inclusive Guyana—one where democracy is participatory, where all voices are respected, and where no citizen is marginalised because of race, class, heritage or political persuasion.
At a time when our nation is undergoing significant economic transformation, we must ensure that the wealth of this country is distributed equitably and fairly, so that every citizen benefits and no community is left behind.
Arrival Day is not only about remembrance; it is a call to recommit ourselves to justice, unity and shared purpose.
Let us reject division and embrace the common humanity that binds us.
Let us honour the sacrifices of those who came before by building a Guyana rooted in fairness, equality and opportunity for all.
