On this Labour Day, the Alliance For Change (AFC) extends sincere greetings and appreciation to all workers across Guyana whose daily efforts sustain our families, communities, and national development.

From the sugar and rice fields, to our many construction sites, public services, private enterprises, schools, hospitals, and emerging industries, the working men and women of Guyana remain the true backbone of our nation. Your labour, resilience, and commitment continue to drive the country forward, often in the face of rising living costs, evolving economic pressures, and changing global realities.

Labour Day 2026 Message from the People’s Progressive Party

We especially salute the women and the mothers, and those who struggle daily, to “make ends meet” in an increasingly difficult economy.

Labour Day is more than a public holiday—it is a reminder of the enduring struggle for fair wages, safe working conditions, social protection, and respect for workers’ rights.

The AFC reaffirms its commitment to policies that place working people at the centre of national development, including:

  • Fair and livable wages that reflect the cost of living
  • Stronger protections for workers in both public and private sectors
  • Expanded access to skills training and meaningful employment opportunities for youth
  • Greater support for small businesses and entrepreneurship as engines of job creation
  • Respect for trade unions as essential partners in national dialogue

We also recognise the sacrifices of essential workers—teachers, nurses, security personnel, sanitation workers, and public servants—whose dedication often goes unnoticed but is vital to national stability and wellbeing.

As Guyana continues to experience economic transformation, it is critical that growth is inclusive, equitable, and rooted in opportunity for all—not just a few. This complaint grows louder and more painful by the day. Unfortunately, it seems not to be heard by the government, as it’s friends, family and favorites enjoy the best of the land.

The AFC remains committed to advocating for a fairer economy where every worker can share in the nation’s progress.  On this Labour Day, we salute every worker in Guyana. Your labour is the foundation upon which our present and future are built. Happy Labour Day.
