The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), through its Women in Sport Commission, will host a Mini Multi-Sport Fun Day today, Saturday, March 7, in observance of International Women’s Day.

The event is scheduled to take place at the National Racquet Centre from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and is expected to attract approximately 250 women and girls from across Guyana’s sporting community.

According to the GOA, the initiative is designed to promote participation, unity and empowerment among women and girls through sport while celebrating their contributions to the development of athletics in Guyana.

The programme will feature mini exhibitions, friendly competitions, interactive discussions and a variety of activities across several sporting disciplines. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience sports outside their primary discipline in a relaxed and engaging environment. Light refreshments will be provided during the event.

President of the Guyana Olympic Association, Godfrey Munroe, highlighted the significance of the initiative in promoting female participation in sports.

“International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder that sport can be a catalyst for empowerment, leadership, and social change. Through this Mini Multi-Sport Fun Day, we are creating a space where women and girls can explore different disciplines, build confidence, and strengthen the bonds within our sporting community. The Guyana Olympic Association remains fully committed to advancing opportunities for women in sport and celebrating their achievements at every level,” Munroe said.

The event is being coordinated by the Women in Sport Commission, chaired by Nicolette Fernandes, along with Vice Chair Ashley Khalil and commission members Denise Jeffrey, Ayanna Watson, Sileena Arjune and Dacia Cummings.

GOA Vice President Cristy Campbell, providing an update following a final review of preparations, reported that all logistical arrangements are in place to ensure a well-organised and engaging experience for both participants and spectators.

Several sporting disciplines will be showcased during the event, including athletics (track and field), squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis, boxing, volleyball, archery, basketball and a fitness challenge.

Female athletes will participate in demonstrations and friendly competitions aimed at encouraging learning, participation and enjoyment of the various sports.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will also field 50 women and girls in a special one-mile run as part of the activities. In addition, 10 participants from other sporting associations—including cricket, football, chess, cycling, bodybuilding and fitness, and netball—will take part in the celebration.

The GOA said the event forms part of activities to mark International Women’s Day 2026 in Guyana and reflects the country’s diverse and growing sporting landscape.

Organisers noted that by bringing athletes from multiple disciplines together in one space, the Mini Multi-Sport Fun Day aims to inspire new sporting interests, strengthen camaraderie among athletes and highlight the important role women and girls play in the development of sport in Guyana.
