The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (MOHSSS) is offering a free weekly legal clinic aimed at reducing the financial barriers that often prevent vulnerable citizens from accessing justice. The clinic is held every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the ministry’s head office on Lamaha Street.

The service is provided by Attorney-at-Law Andre Jagnandan and covers a range of legal matters, including protection and occupation orders, tenancy issues, child support, spousal maintenance, and related court applications. Since the clinic’s launch, more than 25 persons have already accessed legal advice and assistance.

In addition to consultations, Jagnandan provides support to complainants and survivors in criminal matters who may be fearful of appearing in court, including free legal representation where necessary. The initiative forms part of the ministry’s wider effort to institutionalise pro bono legal services and ensure access to legal support for those unable to afford private representation.

The weekly clinic also complements the ministry’s Legal Pro-Bono 500 Initiative, established in partnership with the Guyana Bar Association, which commits attorneys to providing free legal assistance to victims of gender-based violence.
