The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is celebrating a remarkable achievement as Second Lieutenant Travis Adams successfully completed the prestigious Brazilian Jungle Operations Course 25/3 Category B, conducted by the Brazilian Army in Manaus, Brazil. The Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, together with officers and ranks of the GDF, extended heartfelt congratulations to 2Lt Adams on this outstanding accomplishment.

The course, held at the renowned Centro de Instrução de Guerra na Selva (CIGS), Brazil’s premier Jungle Warfare Instruction Centre, is designed to train platoon and battalion commanders in the art of jungle operations. This year, 48 officers from Captain to Second Lieutenant began the rigorous programme, and only 35 successfully graduated. 2Lt Adams distinguished himself as the only foreign student to complete the course, demonstrating exceptional endurance, discipline, and adaptability under demanding environmental conditions.

“The training covered jungle survival, tactical operations, advanced jungle craft, and numerous physically demanding tasks,” the GDF noted, emphasizing that 2Lt Adams’ exemplary performance reflects not only his personal resilience and professionalism but also the high standards upheld by the Guyana Defence Force.

As a Special Forces Officer, the advanced skills acquired by 2Lt Adams—including jungle survival, reconnaissance, and small-unit tactical operations—directly enhance the GDF’s capacity to operate effectively within Guyana’s dense interior terrain. The competencies gained, such as advanced land navigation and survival under extreme conditions, significantly strengthen the Force’s ability to conduct special operations, search and rescue missions, border security patrols, counter illicit activities, and respond rapidly to emerging threats.

This achievement also underscores the enduring partnership between the Guyana Defence Force and the Brazilian Army. Collaborative training initiatives like the Jungle Warfare Course promote mutual respect, shared expertise, and professional development, enhancing interoperability and operational cooperation. The success of officers like 2Lt Adams highlights how such engagements elevate individual skills while contributing to the overall readiness and effectiveness of both nations’ defence forces.

2Lt Adams’ accomplishment is a testament to dedication, courage, and the pursuit of excellence, serving as an inspiring example for all GDF personnel and reinforcing Guyana’s commitment to maintaining a highly skilled and resilient defence force.
