By Mark DaCosta- In a tragic incident, a Spanish-speaking national, Ariel Betancourt Ramirez was fatally stabbed during an attempted robbery in Georgetown on Middle Road, La Penitence. The occurrence, which is currently under investigation, highlights the ongoing issue of crime.

Just a short while ago, the victim, whose identity has yet to be officially confirmed, found himself confronting two assailants who arrived on a motorcycle.  As he walked along the road, these men attempted to snatch a gold chain from around his neck. An act of bravery led him to resist their advances, igniting a violent confrontation. Unfortunately, one of the attackers was armed with a knife and inflicted multiple wounds upon him, resulting in the theft of the jewellery he cherished.

Despite his injury, the victim bravely raised an alarm, managing to move a short distance before succumbing to his wounds and collapsing onto the pavement. The perpetrators fled the scene, leaving chaos and fear in their wake. Local residents expressed their shock at the occurrence, with one witness recounting how they heard commotion outside, prompted by barking dogs and unusual noises. These signals of distress drove them to investigate, and they discovered the man lying on the ground, while a taxi driver, who was present, quickly realised it was not just an unfortunate accident but rather a violent robbery.

The response from the community was immediate, as concerned neighbours contacted emergency services upon witnessing the grim scene. Sadly, by the time help arrived, the victim had already been pronounced dead, and his body was subsequently taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Residents painted a picture of a man who was familiar to them; he was someone who had a routine that involved regularly picking up his wife from work. The victim was noticed by others, strolling along the road in the afternoon sun, embodying a simple yet endearing image of marital care.

As the tragedy unfolded, the man’s wife arrived at the scene and soon identified her husband. Overcome by grief, she was taken to the police station for further assistance with the ongoing investigation. Witnesses remarked upon the victim’s daily routine, underscoring the senselessness of the violence that cut short a life dedicated to family and community.
