By Mark DaCosta- In a significant development concerning public safety and police accountability in Region 1, authorities have commenced an investigation following a video that emerged on social media, which depicts a policeman brandishing an assault rifle and discharging rounds in a public area. The officer has been placed under close arrest while the Office of Professional Responsibility has been tasked with conducting a thorough inquiry into the incident, highlighting a disturbing trend of misconduct within the police force.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) confirmed that the policeman involved was stationed in Port Kaituma and took swift action upon the video’s release, demonstrating the growing concern over the standards of behaviour exhibited by officers in our nation. The rapid response by Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken reflects an acknowledgment of the seriousness of the situation, particularly as the footage showed a reckless display of weaponry that could have endangered civilian lives. In the footage, the officer, clad in civilian attire, allegedly threatened individuals and fired shots indiscriminately, while two women attempted to defuse the volatile situation.

Eyewitness accounts have suggested that this incident is symptomatic of deeper issues within the police hierarchy, particularly under the leadership of Senior Superintendent K. Ramana, who oversees Region 1. There have been numerous complaints concerning the officer’s prior behaviour, which raises important questions about supervision and accountability within the force. Critics have pointed to an apparent culture of impunity, wherein misconduct is overlooked or suppressed by higher-ranking officials, contributing to a climate of mistrust and insecurity among the populace.

Public outrage has surged not only due to the threatening behaviour displayed in the video but also because of the perceived failure of the police management to address violations by officers in a timely and appropriate manner. The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party has publicly condemned this incident, highlighting a concerning pattern of inadequate oversight and disciplinary action within the Guyana Police Force. They assert that the current management’s complacency allows such risky behaviours to persist, further undermining public confidence in law enforcement.

The GPF has assured citizens that the video footage will be integral to the ongoing investigation aimed at determining whether the officer will face both disciplinary and criminal actions. The police force has stated its commitment to maintaining professional standards; however, the public remains sceptical about whether this investigation will lead to real accountability or if it will fall victim to the same protective dynamics that have historically plagued the organisation.

Moreover, the incident raises significant concerns about how police conduct is monitored, particularly in a region where drug trafficking and violent crime have exposed vulnerabilities within the force. Some local leaders within Region 1 lament that the current police management seems more focused on protecting ‘the commander people’ — officers with connections to the upper echelons of the force — rather than ensuring the integrity of the service and the safety of the community.

As this story continues to unfold, citizens across our nation are left wondering if the GPF is truly committed to reform or if these acts of misconduct will merely result in a temporary investigation that fails to address the root causes of the problem. There is a palpable demand for transparency and a substantive shift towards accountability within the police force, with public patience wearing thin as incidents like this threaten to erode any remaining trust.
