AFC Raises Alarm Over Electoral Integrity Following EU Election Report

By Mark DaCosta- The Alliance For Change (AFC) has expressed its appreciation for the insights provided by the European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM), following the General and Regional Elections held on September 1, 2025. The party’s preliminary assessment of the EU’s report highlights significant concerns regarding the electoral integrity in our nation, mirroring longstanding issues the AFC has raised, particularly regarding the conduct of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) during election campaigns.

In a recent release following a press conference, the AFC outlines their initial reactions to the EU EOM’s findings, which they believe resonate with their ongoing concerns about the electoral process in our country. The report identifies several critical shortcomings, notably the structure of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and issues surrounding an inflated voters list. The report also addresses what the AFC describes as the “partisan media coverage” that has pervaded recent elections and the misuse of state resources by the ruling PPP.

The party did not shy away from critiquing President Irfaan Ali, who has been noted for downplaying the EU report’s significance. The AFC reiterated that such dismissive behaviour is typical of the PPP whenever confronted with criticism. It stated, “This is typical PPP behaviour. Any report that is critical of their government, they immediately dismiss and seek to discredit.” This sentiment underscores a growing concern among many in our nation regarding the ruling party’s transparency and accountability.

One of the most striking assertions in the AFC’s response to the EU EOM’s report is the extensive use of state resources for political campaigns, particularly by ministers of the PPP. The AFC highlighted that during the critical campaigning period between July and August, President Ali allegedly utilised state resources for 43 trips to various interior regions, raising alarms about the potential manipulation of public resources for partisan gain. The Carter Center had also drawn attention to similar issues, further substantiating the AFC’s claims.

The report critiques the PPP’s tight grip on state media, which has historically been a contentious issue. The AFC pointed out that the PPP’s control over both public and many private media outlets creates an uneven playing field, hampering genuine competition. They thanked certain media organisations like Stabroek News and HGPTV for striving to maintain balanced reporting during the elections, indicating a recognition of responsible journalism amid broader media complicity.

Highlighting specific points from the EU EOM’s assessment, the AFC focuses on the continued influence of political divisions within GECOM, stating that the commission’s structure needs urgent reform. The party had previously put forward a proposal to expand the number of commissioners to include civil society representatives, a move intended to bolster the independence and credibility of the electoral body. Regrettably, this suggestion received no serious consideration, illustrating the PPP’s reluctance to embrace necessary changes.

The EU EOM’s recommendations aim to enhance the electoral process and strengthen democracy; however, the AFC remains sceptical about the likelihood of genuine reform under the current government. The party emphasised their readiness to participate in peaceful public actions to advocate for meaningful changes, reflecting a commitment to the democratic principles that underpin our nation.

As Guyanese citizens continue to navigate the complexities of the political landscape, the AFC’s articulation of the EU EOM’s findings serves as a clarion call for vigilance and accountability. With past experiences of electoral irregularities fresh in the minds of the populace, the ongoing dialogue surrounding electoral integrity is more crucial than ever.

By continuing to shine a light on these issues, the AFC says that it aims to galvanise public discourse and spur collective action towards a more equitable and transparent electoral framework. Ultimately, the quest for a truly democratic process in our country remains a fundamental aspiration that necessitates the involvement of all stakeholders committed to upholding the values of democracy, says the AFC.
