The Administration of the University of Guyana has launched an investigation into a possible breach of its internal COVID-19 protocols by students.

Though it did not detail the suspected breach, the University indicated that it received a selfie video, in which some students, appear to be acting in ways that breach the University’s extensive COVID-19 protocols.

“The Administration finds this unfortunate and deeply disturbing and has taken immediate corrective action,” UG said in a statement on Wednesday. It disclosed that the students in the video are being identified and will face disciplinary action under the Acts and Statues of the University immediately.

While the majority of the University’s classes are being held exclusively online, courses with laboratory components for students who need these courses in order to graduate this year, have been allowed under strict COVID-19 Protocols for sanitization, masking, and physical distancing.

According to the University’s COVID-19 protocols, Heads of Departments and or lecturers are required to submit requests for students to enter the campus at least three weeks in advance to allow for approval and planning. Once approval is granted, students are advised of the protocols in place for the entry.

“Upon arrival at the University students will be asked to provide their name and ID (whether
University or National ID) for it to be cross checked with the submitted list by security. NB students must arrive with a properly fitted face mask (N95, surgical or cloth mask) covering the nose and mouth,” the University explained.

It said once the name of a student appears on the list, they will be guided to the hand wash stations and proceed to the temperature check stations, where personnel would check and record the temperatures of the students entering the campus.
