The Annandale Secondary School community is in mourning following the tragic death of 15-year-old student Navindra Mahes, who was struck and killed by a car driven by a female Police Corporal on Thursday morning along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to reports, the fatal accident occurred at approximately 07:30 hrs, during the busy morning rush hour when the “third lane” system was in effect. Mahes, a resident of Le Ressouvenir, ECD, was reportedly attempting to cross the pedestrian crossing when he was hit by motor car PAB 214, which was being driven west along the northern carriageway.

Police investigations and video footage indicate that the teen had been standing on the median before trying to cross. As he stepped onto the pedestrian crossing, the left front side of the vehicle struck him, flinging him several feet into the air.

Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist and transported Mahes to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where doctors determined he had sustained severe head injuries and a fractured right leg. Despite emergency efforts, the young student succumbed to his injuries at 09:56 hrs. His body now lies at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The 35-year-old Police Corporal involved in the incident has since been placed under close arrest, as investigators continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs extended heartfelt condolences to Navindra’s family, friends, and schoolmates, describing the loss as a moment of “deep sorrow” for all concerned. The Ministry assured the public that the case is being treated with “the utmost seriousness, transparency, and in accordance with established procedures.”

Meanwhile, police ranks have been stationed at the hospital to provide support to the grieving relatives, as the Annandale Secondary community grapples with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of one of its own.
