A Corentyne farmer has been arrested by Police for the murders of two Corentyne brother and the stabbing of two others on Sunday on the No. 43 Public Road, East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six).
The dead men have been identified as 23-year-old labourer Mahendra ‘Sunny’ Ramoutar and 25-year-old Suendra Ramoutar both of No. 43 Public Road, Corentyne. The duo are said to be brothers.
According to Police, the suspect, whose name was not released by Police, was imbibing in a yard at between 21:30h and 22:30h when an argument ensued between his brother, Randolph ‘Rondy’ Richmond and his wife Sookmatie Richmond.
Relatives told Village Voice News that the Mahendra and Surendra Ramoutar lived with Sookmatie Richmond and their step-father, Randolph ‘Rondy’ Richmond.
Reports are that Sookmattie and her husband, had a heated argument when the woman’s younger son, Mahendra intervened in an effort to ward off his stepfather from attacking his mother. It was while doing so a scuffle ensued between the two men. Randolph’s brother, who lives next door then intervened and stabbed the young man about his body.
“When I come here this morning then I hearing that Sunny and his step father had it out because he was fighting with his mother and the stepfather call his brother over and the man just take out a sharp thing a stab up Sunny just like that,” a relative said.
Eyewitnesses recounted that shortly after stabbing Mahendra, the suspect ventured outside where he stabbed Surendra, who was standing on the road, several times
about his body.
Mahendra was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital while Surendra was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital. Both were pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, Richmond’s sister Hemwattie (only name given), disclosed that her sister received a stab wound to her breast. She is said to be recovering at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
“When I go see her, she nah even know what’s going on. She keep asking for her one son. She don’t know that both of them dead. Her husband tell me that they had a little problem at home and a fight started,” Hemwattie told Village Voice News.
In tears, the woman said she is still questioning why Randolph’s brother killed both of her nephews and injured their mother.
“Something is definitely wrong because why will he kill one and then hustle to go outside and kill the other one. It is not right and then he stab my sister,” she remarked while noting that her sister is unaware that her sons have died.
“She is very emotional and stressed and she keep asking for her one son. She know that one get stab but nobody told her about the other one,” the emotional woman said.
Police in a statement said that a 30-year-old construction worker, Anthony Persaud was also injured on Sunday. Like Soomattie, his condition is listed as serious.
“The suspect was arrested and is presently in custody assisting with the investigation, a knife, suspected to be the murder weapon was recovered at the scene and lodged as evidence,” Police said in a statement.
Investigations are ongoing.
