By Mark DaCosta- In a chilling episode that has rattled the heart of our nation, the Guyana Police Force has made a substantial stride in their investigation of the devastating explosion that occurred on October 26, 2025, at the Mobil Fuel Station located at Regent and King Streets in Georgetown. This horrific incident led to the tragic loss of six-year-old Soraya Bourne’s life and caused injuries to four other individuals, leaving a profound sense of grief and outrage across our communities.

On the night of the explosion, reports indicate that a suspicious male individual, identified as a Spanish speaker, was noticed in the vicinity carrying a large black plastic bag. Shortly thereafter, a powerful explosion erupted on the western side of the fuel station, resulting in the destruction of not only the gas station but also damaging nearby buildings and vehicles. Witnesses described the blast as powerful and horrifying, with many citizens expressing their shock at the level of devastation it caused.

In response to this tragic event, the police promptly established a Special Investigative Task Force, assembling a unit that included members from various segments of the police force and other essential stakeholders. The coordination of this investigation was overseen by Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken and his executive team, emphasising the importance placed on addressing this heinous act of violence. The involvement of intelligence and forensic experts further highlights the serious approach taken by the Guyana Police Force in tackling such incidents with meticulous care.

Utilising advanced technology and operational strategies, the police worked hand in hand with the Safe City Command Centre and other intelligence agencies. Innovative tools such as video-forensic analysis, digital tracking, and data correlation were pivotal in tracing the suspect’s movements before and after the explosion. The effort culminated in the capture of the primary suspect, Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo, a Venezuelan national, who was apprehended at Vergenoegen Sideline Dam, East Bank Essequibo, following a well-coordinated operation led by a Superintendent.

The apparent success of law enforcement underscores a notable shift toward integrating contemporary policing methods with traditional investigative approaches. “This success underscores the integration of modern policing technology with traditional investigative work,” commented Commissioner Hicken, highlighting the force’s commitment to enhancing their operational capabilities in counter-terrorism and the fight against organised crime.

At present, Ramirez is in custody while further investigations are underway to ascertain the broader implications of the event, including the possibility of connections to a wider organised network. The police have indicated that several other individuals of interest are also being questioned, as they delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this act of violence.

In piecing together the legal framework for prosecution, detectives are diligently working to prepare charges under the Terrorism Act, specifically targeting Sections 309A and 309B, as well as related charges of murder, attempted murder, arson, and malicious damage to property. Legal consultations with the Director of Public Prosecutions are ongoing, ensuring that the perpetrators of this senseless act face the full force of the law.

As our nation grapples with this tragedy, it becomes increasingly clear that we must remain vigilant against such acts of terror. The Commissioner expressed commendation for law enforcement personnel involved in the investigation, asserting, “This incident demonstrates the Force’s capability, discipline and professionalism.” However, many citizens are left questioning the effectiveness of government policies to prevent such incidents, stirring discontent towards the ruling administration, which has faced its share of scrutiny over national security issues.

With the investigation still underway, the nation holds its breath, hoping for answers and justice for the victims. The need for ongoing cooperation and support across local and international law enforcement agencies is paramount as we navigate this unsettling chapter in our country’s history. In the face of terror, it is imperative that we strive for unity and resilience, ensuring that acts of violence are met with decisive and lawful responses in the pursuit of safety for all.

It must be noted that this publication has observed that the entire national conversation has dominated the public space to the exclusion of everything else.
