Clarification on the Issue Concerning the Vessel Abdumalik

The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) wishes to correct the misconception fuelled  by a Peter Dyal – the former owner of the passenger vessel “Abdumalik”, which was previously  licensed to operate on the Georgetown to Vreed-en-Hoop water taxi service.

On July 5, 2024, the Abdumalik made contact with a pile in the vicinity of the Stabroek mooring  facility, resulting in damage to its bottom. The Harbour Master promptly rendered assistance, at  the request, and with the consent, of Peter Dyal, to safely remove the vessel, which was at risk of  sinking and obstructing other vessels operating in the area.

Subsequently, Mr. Dyal sold the vessel. The resulting transfer of ownership was facilitated by the  MARAD in accordance with established regulations. Further, in keeping with established  procedures, the corresponding space in the “turn system” for the vessel to operate on the  Georgetown – Vreed-en-Hoop service was transferred to the new owner.

Mr. Dyal has since submitted a request for a new allocation within the turn system. The applicant  was informed that his application cannot be accommodated, as the system is over-subscribed and  there are several pending applications that predate his request.

MARAD remains committed to collaborating with all speedboat operators to ensure the continued  provision of safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for the travelling public.
